Terms of Service
Last updated June 29, 2026
These terms govern your use of the hosted tela service at
telawiki.com ("the Service"). By creating an account or using
the Service, you agree to these terms.
Self-hosted deployments. tela is open-source software you
can run yourself. If you operate your own instance, these terms cover only
the operator-run service at telawiki.com; your own deployment
is governed by you and the
open-source license.
What the Service is
tela is a markdown-native team wiki. The hosted service at
telawiki.com includes a wiki editor with real-time collaboration,
an MCP server so AI agents can read and write your wiki, semantic search and
Ask (Q&A over your pages), Atlas (AI knowledge generation from connected
sources), spreadsheets, deck presentations, WebDAV sync, and space sharing. We may add,
change, or remove features at any time.
Accounts and eligibility
- You must be able to form a binding agreement to use the Service. If you are under 18, you need a parent or guardian's consent.
- Provide accurate registration information and a valid email address you control. Confirm your email to activate your account.
- You are responsible for all activity under your account and for keeping your credentials and access tokens secure.
- We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, threaten the Service or its users, or remain inactive for an extended period.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Break the law, infringe others' intellectual property or privacy rights, or store content you have no right to store.
- Upload malware, attempt unauthorized access, probe vulnerabilities, or disrupt the Service or its infrastructure.
- Abuse, overload, or circumvent rate limits, quotas, or access controls.
- Use the Service to store payment-card data, health records, government-ID numbers, or third-party secrets (see the privacy policy).
- Misrepresent your identity or an agent's authority to act on your behalf.
- Use the Atlas AI feature to generate content that is deceptive, harmful, or illegal.
Your content
You retain ownership of the content you create. You grant us a limited, non-exclusive right to store, process, search, and display it solely to operate the Service for you — including indexing it for full-text and semantic search, embedding it for retrieval, and serving it to your team and to AI agents you authorize. You are responsible for your content and for having the rights to post it. You can export your content as plain markdown or delete it at any time.
AI-generated content (Atlas)
Atlas is tela's knowledge-generation feature: you connect a git repository or Jira project, and Atlas runs an automated pipeline to draft documentation pages in your wiki. A few things to know:
- Atlas-generated pages are labeled with
generator=atlasmetadata so you can identify them. - AI-generated content can be incomplete, inaccurate, or outdated. You are responsible for reviewing it before relying on it or sharing it.
- The source content you connect (git commits, Jira issues) is processed by a self-hosted language model on our servers — it is not sent to any third-party AI provider. See the privacy policy for details.
- We grant no warranty on the accuracy or fitness of Atlas-generated content.
- tela does not maintain a cloud AI fallback. When the AI service is unavailable (e.g., due to maintenance or outage), Ask and Atlas features return a service-unavailable error. This is by design — your content never leaves your tela instance.
AI agents and the MCP server
When you connect an AI host (such as Claude or ChatGPT) via OAuth or a Personal Access Token, it acts on your behalf with your account's permissions. You are responsible for the actions you authorize an agent to take, including content it creates, edits, or deletes. Connected AI hosts are third parties governed by their own terms and privacy policies.
Plans, billing, and trials
tela offers a free plan and paid plans (Personal and Team) with higher limits. New accounts start on a 30-day Personal trial — no card required. After the trial ends your account moves to the free plan unless you subscribe.
- Paid subscriptions are billed through Polar, our merchant of record. Polar's terms and privacy policy apply to payment processing.
- Subscription fees are charged in advance on a monthly or annual basis as you select at checkout.
- You can cancel at any time. Access to paid features continues until the end of the current billing period.
- We may change plan pricing with reasonable notice. Continued use after a price change means you accept the new price.
Refunds. No partial refunds are issued for the remaining days of a monthly billing period after cancellation. For annual subscriptions, a pro-rata refund for unused whole months may be issued if you cancel within 30 days of the annual billing date — email tela@telawiki.com for billing disputes. Polar, as merchant of record, ultimately processes and approves refunds in accordance with their own policies.
Self-hosting the binary
The tela binary is open-source and free to run on your own infrastructure. When you self-host:
- The software is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind.
- You are responsible for your instance, its configuration, security, data, and compliance.
- You are the data controller for any personal data your instance processes.
- These service terms do not apply to your self-hosted instance — the open-source license does.
Availability
We aim to keep the hosted service available and reliable, but we do not offer a formal uptime guarantee. We may perform maintenance, push updates, or temporarily restrict access. Keep your own backups of anything important — your content exports as plain markdown at any time.
Disclaimer of warranties
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, or that AI-generated content will be accurate or complete.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim arising from these terms or the Service is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose.
Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your content, your use of the Service, or your violation of these terms or the rights of others.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Finland, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
Changes
We may update these terms as the Service evolves. Material changes will be reflected by the "last updated" date above; continued use of the Service after a change means you accept the updated terms.
